Do What You Can
Not everyone can afford to renovate their heating systems or energy sources – but that doesn’t mean they cannot contribute in a real way to reduction of the carbon footprint.

The first steps then that anyone can take is in the exterior – the garden – be it in the front or back of the actual building that is your home.

If you have space to plant a tree, then plant one. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

If you don’t particularly like gardening, then aim for a low maintenance garden – trees, bushes and shrubs – which basically can be left alone. Your local nursery will provide information on the right types for your region.

However, if you like gardening then the world’s your oyster! There is so much you can do and so many ideas, that you can make a real impression environmentally as well as get lots of pleasure.

Even apartment dwellers can do this – many plants and shrubs are happy to live in a pot – so long as they are watered and fed. Roses, dwarf fruit trees, herbs, annuals all can be grown in pots, plus many ferns and tropical plants.
