Square Foot Gardening

First off, let me say that the concept of square foot gardening has never really penetrated my radar as I have never been short of garden space.

Yet, I often see it (square foot gardening) mentioned and just glanced at it and moved on to what I was after to read up on.  My mistake

It does seem an ideal solution for those with a lack of gardening space and also for increasing productivity.

Hence, I thought it was worthwhile writing about it for those who might consider it a solution to their needs.

As it isn’t something I have tried out to prove or disprove, I do recommend that you do more reading up on it so that you are well prepared before you venture into it. Not that you will lose anything if you just go ahead and jump in.

So this article is a teaser – if you will – information I have read up on – rather than done (yet).

The concept of square foot gardening was originated by an engineer named Mel Bartholomew, who has suggested that planting in raised beds of squares of four feet by four is more efficient that doing it in rows.  Then, subdividing into one foot squares.  And, according to what I have read, it works.  It is raised beds on steroids.

Why do it?

  • It is easier on care and maintenance Indoor Plants for Clean Air and Beauty – less bending too!  This is great for those of us who are getting on in years!
  • No wasted soil areas – such as the gaps between rows where you walk to do the care.
  • Watering can be more specifically targeted (especially if on a drip system) – less wastage on the empty gap areas.  Better water retention.
  • Easier to weed – and less of it.

Many expert gardeners say that soil does not need to be dug over if you compost and mulch well – square foot gardening fits right into this.

I also think that it is a better design idea – especially for backyards where the food garden can be seen or needs to be integrated into the whole visually.

Additionally, I like the idea of raised garden beds for ornamental gardening (annuals etc) – and applying the principle of square foot gardening or an adaptation of it fits in real well.

Result should be better flowering, less irrigation, easier for organic care and pest control – healthier plants
